The Supreme Court has ended the proceedings against Karnataka High Court Judge Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda following his public apology for the remarks he made during court sessions that sparked controversy.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, leading a five-judge bench, emphasised that the decision was made to uphold the dignity of the judiciary.

Justice Srishananda's remarks, made during a landlord-tenant dispute, included referring to a Muslim-majority area in Bengaluru as "Pakistan" and making misogynistic comments about a woman lawyer.

These comments went viral on social media, prompting the Supreme Court to request a report from the Karnataka High Court.

The Chief Justice stated that calling any part of India "Pakistan" undermines the country's territorial integrity and highlighted the importance of transparency in court proceedings.

The bench expressed concern over casual remarks that may reflect personal biases, particularly those directed at specific genders or communities.

They emphasised the importance of judges being careful with their comments, particularly due to how social media can increase the visibility of courtroom conversations.

The Supreme Court had initiated this case to ensure that judicial commentary aligns with the expected decorum in courts.
